Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing the radiant Tara Viswanathan in my Walnut Creek studio, and her session was nothing short of breathtaking.
Maternity Photo Session Vision
Tara came into her maternity photo shoot in the San Francisco Bay Area with an incredible vision. She had thoughtfully curated a vision board, which she shared with me prior to our session. Some mamas arrive at the studio with a clear idea of what they want, bringing wardrobe pieces from home, while others prefer to fully embrace the experience and let me handle the styling. Tara was a mix of both-she came in with inspiration but also trusted the creative process to bring her vision to life.
To help her feel her best, we had the talented Cejana Ferreira on-site for hair and makeup. Having professional styling as part of the session ensures that every mama walks into the studio feeling pampered and leaves looking and feeling like an absolute goddess.
Capturing Tara’s Photography Style
During our pre-session questionnaire, Tara mentioned she was drawn to classic, timeless portraits but also wanted to channel a little bit of an “America’s Next Top Model – Maternity Edition” energy. She loved the idea of striking, elegant poses but also wanted images that felt effortless and natural.
We worked through a variety of poses and setups, focusing on angles that highlighted her silhouette. She preferred side-profile shots over front-facing poses, so we leaned into dramatic lighting and a variety of styled outfits to showcase her bump in the most flattering way. Tara was open to tastefully artistic shots as well, which allowed us to create some truly breathtaking professional maternity photos in the San Francisco Bay Area that she’ll cherish forever.
The Maternity Studio Experience
My San Francisco Bay Area maternity photos sessions are designed to be a stress-free, full-service experience. From the moment Tara arrived, everything was taken care of-from professional styling to wardrobe selection to guided posing. The session lasted about three hours, with the first half dedicated to hair and makeup and the second half capturing a variety of looks in the studio.
Some of Tara’s must-have shots included dramatic, high-fashion portraits, soft and feminine close-ups, and movement-filled images that felt organic and dreamy. Throughout the session, we made sure she felt confident in her body and in posing!
More Than Just Digital Files
Initially, Tara thought she would only want digital files from her session, but after seeing the images, she fell in love with the idea of having tangible artwork. During her in-studio ordering appointment, she selected a stunning heirloom album and a few beautifully framed prints to display in her home. This is why I always encourage my clients to think beyond digital images. Having physical artwork of this special season in life is truly priceless.
